My HUGE List of Binge Worthy Shows to Watch
These uncertain days are filled with countless stressors, for all of us. Social distancing and the covid-19 pandemic will forever alter each of our lives. My clinicals were cancelled for the rest of the semester. None of us know where this currently leaves us or when we’ll finish our FNP (family nurse practitioner) but it sure doesn’t look like August. I was also supposed to begin my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) this summer – but that also looks like it will be delayed. There is zero way I can try to finish the paused clinical hours remaining for the semester (roughly 100) in the summer, then start my summer hours (almost 260) and add nearly 70 hours of pysch rotations – at least not in the summer when the semester is already shorter than fall or spring. Soooooo… likely starting my PMHNP in a year, because programs only start once a year. BOO!
Initially I was hugely emotional about the complete lack of control I have over how this will shake out – but then I finally realized there’s absolutely nothing I can do about any of it. Nothing. The program/CCNE isn’t giving us any online option to gain some hours – so we’re all basically just stuck on hold.
I realize many across the world are facing larger issues than my school woes – but this is my reality that this virus has impacted. My brother lost his job last week, and had to let go his entire restaurant staff (hopefully only temporarily). My family’s restaurant also closed its doors – for whoever knows how long. My mom is a teacher and still has no clue what her district is going to do for the remainder of the school year. She teaches at a very disadvantaged school in the city where most of the little ones don’t have access to online classrooms.
Now that I’m pretty much homebound until at least May – I’ve been trying to look at the downtime as an opportunity to slow down and unwind. I’ve cleaned the house (I bought a new steam mop!), rearranged furniture, emptied out closets and drawers, decluttered, and downloaded some new books. I’ve also been taking Poppy on a walk around the neighborhood every day, now that the sun is out, and even managed to get a light sunburn while weeding the yard yesterday – oops! It’s definitely time to remember to put on sunscreen again. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I battled an ENORMOUS flying insect last night – aka a crane fly/ mosquito hawk that was as big as my hand. They. Are. EVERYWHERE and I’m not prepared for the bugs of summer to make their return.
I tried a new cookie recipe the other day – which I will share soon – they’re the best I’ve ever made. We also made my father in law’s infamous spaghetti sauce for dinner… my plate was ENORMOUS. I’ll share that recipe soon, too. Pasta + dessert + a good glass of wine, and some super comfy (and stretchy) clothes, and a few binge worthy TV shows to watch = my escapism heaven.
I think we’re so spoiled in the age of readily available tv shows: particularly of the Netflix variety. How easy/awesome is it to be able to park it on the couch or your bed and dig into a new show with ALL of the season’s episodes available? Waiting week after week for my shows like This is Us or Grey’s Anatomy to see one episode is so hard! Again…., spoiled much?
I LOVE finding a new show to dig into, and when I do, it’s supremely difficult for me to not stay up all night to finish every available episode. I also am rather fond of nostalgia and tend to rewatch shows I’ve loved – whether the series is long retired or still going – from the very beginning. Do you?
Ok enough jibber jabber – here’s my list of (in my opinion) the best tv shows to binge watch (and a few movies) when you have the time or need – I also wrote a list last year, so this might be a bit repetitive on some! Another thing, many of these shows are available on other networks, these are just what I watch them on.
Best TV Shows to Binge Watch
DEFENDING JACOB
This is a new show coming April 24th starring Chris Evans (Captain America) and Michelle Dockery (Mary in Downton Abbey). It looks riveting! Synopsis: After a shocking crime rocks a small town, an assistant district attorney finds himself torn between his sworn duty to uphold the law and his unconditional love for his son.
FOR ALL MANKIND
I had paid this show no attention or interest until Charlie wanted to watch it. To be honest I hadn’t heard of it either. I’m SO glad we started it because we FLEW through the first season and are now in the beginning of the second. The show begins with the race for the moon and the craze surrounding the world. International relations between the US and Russia were tense along with the political turmoil rocking the country. The story follows multiple characters and a cascade of events that could have happened if we weren’t the first to land on the moon. I love the layers of each character and how they connect with each other. It’s a must!
THE MORNING SHOW
This. Show. Ah, I couldn’t watch it fast enough. The cast of this show is absolutely phenomenal (Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell, etc.) and really makes the storyline come to life! Imagine the story of the Today Show & Matt Lauer – but in fiction.
SEE
All you Jason Momoa fans – this is for you. I loved this show’s storyline. Synopsis: In a future where humankind has lost the ability to see and is forced to interact in new ways, a set of twins with sight is born, challenging the status quo.
SERVANT
I wouldn’t call this show scary – it’s more of a thriller you’re constantly trying to figure out. M. Night Shyamalan is a favorite of mine, and this show didn’t disappoint. It’s eerie, it’s somewhat strange – but leaves you wanting to know more.
TED LASSO
This show was so freaking cute. This might be my favorite thing Jason Sudeikis has ever done. It starts out with a well-known US football coach (Sudeikis) infamous for his ability to transform teams whose records were say, sub par, into extraordinary winning teams. He is hired to bring an English club soccer team out of the ditch – knowing nothing about soccer. His humor is HILARIOUS and the cast is equally lovable. This show genuinely made me smile every single episode.
TEHRAN
Ah this show had me on the edge of my seat. I love a good spy/thriller action-packed show that immediately gets you hooked! Tamar Rabinyan is both a skilled hacker and Israeli agent who attempts to infiltrate the inner workings of Iran and their rumored nuclear reactor. She happens upon a few unexpected outcomes that leave you in suspense!
TRUTH BE TOLD
The reviews on this show are all over the place but I genuinely enjoy all of the actors and therefore loved the show. Octavia Spencer and Aaron Paul bring together a podcast revived in the hopes to perhaps free a man she (Octavia’s character) may have wrongly helped put behind bars.
THE MANDALORIAN
PRAISE the creators of baby Yoda. That’s all I need to say.
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER
I’m a total Marvel fanatic and this show did not disappoint. The Falcon is left questioning assuming the role of Captain America after Steve Rogers leaves him the shield. Should he step into the role, should he relinquish the shield? He and Bucky reluctantly join forces to eliminate the growing threat of a newly-formed European activist group and encounter much more than they anticipated. I won’t spoil anything with the characters that are introduced within the series but I LOVE that the show portrays very real events happening in our own society.
WANDAVISION
The Scarlet Witch was a character that I felt didn’t get as much attention within the Marvel movies. We see a little of her past and present but what happened to her in a world without Vision? What would their future have become? The show is adorable, funny, and heart-warming although I really had no clue what to think as to where it was headed in the first two or three episodes. I really hope there’s another season because this was SO WELL DONE.
Let’s also just realize that I’ve watched every.single.movie. on Disney + because Disney was my childhood and it comforts me, mmk?
THE FOLLOWING
Kevin Bacon, the forever all American hero. I was so sad when this show was cancelled. It’s a thriller that chills you to the bone but also ensnares you from the moment you start watching it. I think there are 3 seasons? I haven’t rewatched this one yet – might do that now!
BAND OF BROTHERS + THE PACIFIC
I just recently rewatched both of these shows. I cannot imagine being in the throes war, but the bonds between these men amidst such peril make a lasting impression.
BIG LITTLE LIES
The cast! Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgard, Adam Scott and Meryl Streep (in season 2). I think I liked season 1 more, but both are phenom.
BIG LOVE
I just rewatched this not too long ago when I was missing living in scenic Utah – I hadn’t seen it in years. RIP Bill Paxton.
BOARDWALK EMPIRE
Steve Buscemi always gets me. His characters are kooky and memorable. In this series, he plays the notorious gangster Nucky Thompson set in Atlantic City. The 1920’s vibes are fantastic. Also available on HULU.
THE CASE AGAINST ADNAN SYED
Did you ever listen to the podcast Serial? This is Serial brought to life in a docuseries. I have to say by the end I was convinced he was innocent and yet, we still don’t know. I won’t spoil it for you but if you haven’t seen it, definitely check it out and let me know what your conclusion is!
CATHERINE THE GREAT
I’m a total history junkie, particularly when it comes to the sovereigns of Europe. Helen Mirren did a marvelous job in this series and the costuming/sets are beautiful. I was vaguely familiar with the title ‘Catherine the Great’ but couldn’t recall much of her history. My father in law is a well-known Russian historian and said “most” of what is in the show is fairly accurate. The Romanoff’s on Prime, however, is apparently VERY incorrect.
CHERNOBYL
Wow. Just wow. The series is jaw-dropping but not as bothersome as influencers now flocking the actual grounds to take photos. Is that irksome to anyone else?
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
I cannot watch this show without cracking up – and Seinfeld. Larry David is a freaking gem of a human and I wish he was my neighbor.
DIVORCE
I’m super sad this got cancelled early due to SJP’s other engagements and obligations.
ENTOURAGE
Ah, this first HBO series I ever watched. Charlie and I had first starting dating when this show was airing. Was this the start of the original “squad”?
EUPHORIA
It took me a minute to get into this show, but wow. So good. Can I be Zendaya when I grow up?
THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT
I LOVE a good thriller – enough to where Charlie constantly makes fun of me for it. Charlie: “What do you want to watch?” Me: “A thriller!” Charlie: eyeroll
Anyway… the flight attendant is a great thriller that follows a hot mess of a young woman who works as a flight attendant and happens to meet a really handsome man. She and he hit it off while in Thailand (I think) BUT …. she wakes up next to him with something very, VERY wrong! I won’t say more because the tale unfolds from there.
GAME OF THRONES
Still waiting for the final book of the series to be released…… COME ON
GIRLS
Parts of this show are so ridiculous, and Charlie can’t stand it – but it KILLS me. This was also my first introduction to Adam Driver. Love him.
HIS DARK MATERIALS
I think HBO did a marvelous job resurfacing this series. The movie from years ago was…… something. I can’t wait to see more!
HUNG
Did anyone ever watch this show? It was cancelled after the third season I think? The dude was a broke soon to be divorcee going through several rough patches and ends up using his dashing good looks to make a buck. It’s lighthearted and silly.
JOHN ADAMS
Another historical series that I can’t help but watch. Paul Giamatti is incredible.
THE NEW POPE / THE YOUNG POPE
It took a couple of episodes to fully get into this show but I like it. The humor is dry but I enjoy Jude Law.
THE NEWSROOM
I’m still super sad this show didn’t go on longer than it did. Might need to rewatch this one soon too.
THE NEVERS
This show only JUST started but I’m already hooked. Give me magic, give me mystery, give me costuming and I’m SO hopelessly addicted. The show revolves around historic England and the sudden and largely unexplainable magical powers acquired by a handful of individuals across the land. Some are feared, some are awed, many are hunted and murdered – or worse.
THE NIGHT OF
This limited series was SO GOOD. Basically a who done it with the guilty until proven innocent mindset. I loved loved this one.
THE OUTSIDER
I’m basically a child and have always been afraid of the boogeyman. This enhanced that fear threefold.
RAISED BY WOLVES
This sci-fi drama is strange and interesting all at once. Artificial intelligence beings begin life on a new planet with human children after a devastating war on earth between humans and AI.
SEX AND THE CITY
So many one liners I still use and laugh at today. But one question, do the young 20’s women watch it too or is it ‘outdated’?
SUCCESSION
This was another show that snagged me from the start. A media conglomerate is near retirement – who will take over the empire?
TITANS
I recently discovered this – which is surprising given that I love DC comics. Modern age DC heroes and villains come to light, some of the well-knowns and some only known in the comics. This is a somewhat more violent and adult version of the lives of these characters, not exactly for children. That being said, I’m starting season 2 and really enjoy it!
TRUE BLOOD
Sookie Stackhouse, you little minx. Also my introduction to Alexander Skarsgard… hello. I could rewatch this entire series over and over again.
THE UNDOING
I’ve loved Nicole Kidman’s acting evolution and this show continues to show her incredible talent. Along with Hugh Grant and Donald Sutherland, this thriller investigates the gruesome murder of a young mother whose child also attends the same prep school as Kidman’s son. Through the very finish the show was exciting and unknown. I absolutely loved it!
WATCHMEN
Tell me you saw this! Ahhh.. Regina King was AMAZING. I had to go back and rewatch the movie to remember where it left off and realize where the show picked up. It’s so good!
WESTWORLD
I’m just now starting this – and season 3 was recently released. Charlie says it takes a couple of episodes to get into it… I’m on episode two.
Also.. If you can’t tell by now, I’m an eternal night owl destined to spend the wee hours of the night mindlessly watching new and old television programs.
WE’RE HERE
I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! Eureka, Bob the Drag Queen, and Shangela are in a 6 part mini series brining drag across the country. I get chills watching the trailer and can’t wait to see the message they bring to the public. LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE.
THE ACT
Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP) based on a true story. WOWZERS
THE BOLD TYPE
I was originally pointed to this show for the outfits – but I love the characters and they talk about relevant societal issues.
CASTLE ROCK
I talked about this in my last binge worthy post – but I’ve loved both seasons. Throughout season 2 you’re kind of wondering how this connects to season 1 – and then they bring it together at the finale. I can’t wait for more.
DOLLFACE
Kat Dennings and Shay Mitchell bring this show to life.
Synopsis: After being dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Jules must deal with her own imagination to literally and metaphorically reenter the world of women and rekindle the female friendships she left behind. I mean.. are we all guilty of this at some point?
FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL
The. Cutest. Show. Ever. Did you ever see the movie? I love love loved the cast they chose for this show and found myself genuinely rooting for each character’s happiness. IT’S SO CUTE!
GREEK
Did anyone watch this about 10ish years ago? I rewatched it recently because Hulu suggested it – awww I forgot how much I used to like this show. It’s definitely cheesy and I was never a sorority girl but the 20 something me unwinded with this show after nursing school stress.
GREY’S ANATOMY
I’m hoping this show never ends, what will I do?! I’ve been a fan from the get go and while I’ve been upset with some of the characters being killed off or let go, I still love the story line. No it’s not all accurate, but they do bring to light some very real issues within the healthcare system. This season let go a character and I never saw it coming…still grieving over it.
HANDMAIDāS TALE
This show is based on Margaret Atwoodās best selling novels. I cringe every time I see the way women are treated in this show because when you think about it we struggle with some very real world problems nestled within the extremes of this show. It goes to show that we should never ever EVER let someone dim our voices.
HIGH FIDELITY
I haven’t watched this yet but it’s in my list. Zoe Kravitz is a new favorite of mine and I can’t wait to see where she takes this.
Synopsis: Rob, a record-store owner in the rapidly gentrified Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, revisits past relationships through music and pop culture while trying to get over her one true love.
LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE
This is a new drama with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington – so far it’s phenomenal. I actually had started this book a year ago and never finished it … I think I’ll do that this week. Of note, the author is writing about her hometown!
MODERN FAMILY
This is another show I’ve genuinely enjoyed from the very beginning – and you get to watch all of the characters grow throughout the years, which I find special. Cam and Mitchell might be my favorites.
PARENTHOOD
Aw… this show was so heartwarming and the ending made me cry. Imagine a middle American family with all the typical struggles. Did you ever watch it?
PEN15
This show is HILARIOUS!! Itās on Hulu and is the complete 90ās teenage flashback for my fellow age group out there. Two best friends are trying to navigate puberty/early high school and I was CRYING laughing.
PRIVATE PRACTICE
Ah, the Grey’s spin off with Kate Walsh. It felt exactly like Grey’s but the Cali version. I miss it!
THE SINNER (Seasons 1-3)
I’m just now starting season 3 – I think season 1 has still been my favorite. These slightly odd and somewhat spooky thrillers are so good. Jessica Biel was exquisite in the first season.
THE TEACHER
I have mixed feelings about this show because it very much demonstrates sexual predators within a high school setting. We’ve all seen various cases of student/teacher cases splashed on the news. This show draws up a story in Austin, Texas from how the relationship and targeting began. It’s difficult to watch and then imagine into real life situations but I can see its purpose in making us more vigilant. I’m in the middle of the season right now and have yet to see how this proceeds.
In my own hometown there have been two separate instances of male teachers targeting female high school students – one of which is currently under investigation. The former was a band director from my own high school. The current is a choir director from a neighboring high school after a female student came forward and claimed he was molesting students in the choir closet. DNA evidence was found on the choir robes (gross!) and to my knowledge this has yet to go to trial. What’s more disturbing is the reaction from townspeople DEFENDING this man! More to come.
THIS IS US
Grab the tissues – no really. EVERY single episode gets me in one way or another.. this show truly is an excellent example of incredible story writing.
VIKINGS
Ah, the ferocity of infamous Vikings brought to TV drama. My mother in law would always say their lineage ties back to Vikings and she surely had the heart and tenacity to make me believe it. Lagertha is the ultimate she boss in this series – watch it and you’ll see what I mean!
YOUNGER
I love this entire cast, so much. And at this point, I canāt decide who I want Liza to be with: Charles makes more sense but Josh is so endearing! For those that havenāt seen it, Liza is a 40 yr old divorcee who is trying to reenter the workforce, only to find itās put her to the curb and filled with young 20 somethings instead. SO she fakes her age..and it starts from there. SUPER good. Also.. Hilary Duff, need I say more?
AQUARIUS
The NBC original was cancelled after two seasons – sadly. David Duchovny played a somewhat burnout detective who happens upon a young Charles Manson.
BATES MOTEL
I loved this show, as creepy as it was. The preceding story to American Psycho, Norman Bates is a character that completely creeps me out.
CHEER
Navarro College – who knew there was so much talent congregated in Corsicana, TX of all places? P.S. Jerry is my favorite person EVER.
THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA Seasons 1-4
I cannot get enough of this show. I grew up watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch on Friday evenings and love that they revamped this show more aligned to the comics. I think the Sabrina character match is spot on (Kiernan Shipka). I know some people are uncomfortable with the evil incantations and affiliations ā but I think itās brilliant and well acted.
THE CROWN
You know, I initially tried to sit down with season 1 a long time ago and just couldn’t get into it. After quarantine hit I’ve picked this back up and I’m now hooked. The episode about the Duke of Windsor being a Nazi sympathizer is just WOW! The Washington Post writes more about it and you find yourself wondering more about what people in power can control in the media. I’m now in the beginning of season 4 which prompted me to watch the newly released Netflix documentary Diana: In her Own Words. I cried.
I cried thinking about how ill Diana was and ultimately alone in her severe struggle with bulimia. I cried for a woman who desperately wanted the love of her husband and knew there was someone else in the picture. I’ve often wondered about the women of history and always consider how incredibly lonely they must have been in their various experiences of isolation and criticism. Catherine of Aragon “failed” to produce an heir and was therefore gotten rid of by Henry VIII and lived the remainder of her days in absolute misery – often forbidden from even seeing her ONLY child. Queen Elizabeth I never married and was endlessly harassed as a single woman ruling a country. Diana’s story is no less sad and ultimately ended in her horrific death. The documentary in her own voice just melts your heart.
DEAD TO ME
Can you argue with this show’s cuteness? Christina Applegate is always awesome and she nailed this role. Think recent widow with anger issues with a detective element and youāre on the right track.
DRACULA
This revamped classic is an interesting twist. I haven’t finished the season yet but it’s definitely … interesting.
FREAKS
This is a movie but WOW. I’m surprised it doesn’t have more hype because the plot and characters are just sublime. If you aren’t blown away by the little girl’s performance we need to discuss.
GILMORE GIRLS
I still haven’t seen this show minus the first episode. Everyone seems to love it dearly..so it’s in my eventual watch list.
GINNY AND GEORGIA
Okay – this has me completely terrified of every having a teenage daughter. The sass and attitude?! Hats off to any of you who do! Georgia (the mom) is a hot mess but seems to be fearless when it comes to protecting her two children. Her past is ugly and threatens to resurface in the new town she and her kids recently began anew. Ginny, the angry teenage daughter, is ready to put down roots, make friends, and *gasp* finally have a boyfriend. Their banter is hilarious and Georgia’s southern accent feels like home. I can’t wait for season 2!
GOSSIP GIRL
I finally watched this show on a whim about a year ago – and yes it’s cheesy but I loved the outfits. I stan a good headband.
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE & THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR
Initially I thought this show was terrifying but I rewatched it and instead was able to pick up on the clues I missed on the first go. The second season, the Haunting of Bly Manor, is also SO good! Many of the actors from the first season now play characters in this new story.
HOUSE OF CARDS
Man…. why did Kevin Spacey turn out to be such a tool? This series was great until he turned out to be a complete skeeze.
I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS
We recently watched this new release and it’s awesome! A young teenage girl who is already a bit of an outcast discovers she can control things with her mind – but she’s of course super freaked out about it.
IN THE DARK
Not sure how we stumbled across this show – but it’s worth a watch. A blind young woman’s friend is murdered, but he happens to be a kid off the streets. She has to convince everyone he’s actually missing/murdered and not just a runaway or flake. I really enjoyed this one!
LOCKE & KEY
The imaginations of writers like this just fascinate me. A family recently loses their father in a horrific tragedy and moves into his old family home – only discover magical keys that deliver of world of mystery and eeriness.
LOVE IS BLIND
This show is such a train wreck – so much so that I couldn’t peel my eyes away. WOW
MESSIAH
I really really liked this one! It’s not based on Jesus or Christianity. Rather, it’s a young man who mystifies the masses with supposed miracles – aka a modern Messiah. The tale is intriguing – I love seeing movies like this (including Contagion or even World War Z) when you get to see how society reacts to something unknown.
THE MIND OF AARON HERNANDEZ
I’m not a football fan whatsoever, but I vaguely remembered this being in the news prior to this documentary. While I think we’re all ultimately responsible for our decisions, it’s highly curious how our demeanor and decision-making thought processes may be altered under the influence of drugs, alcohol, trauma, stress, and repeated brain injury. I also watched the trial of Gabriel Hernandez .. and it’s so emotional and triggering that I wasn’t sure whether to include it in this list or not. The images are deeply disturbing – but I think it’s so important that we’re aware of what’s going on around us. This is such a grotesque example of how every single system failed this little boy and the ultimate lack of accountability.
MINDHUNTER
This show is loosely based on true events – and depicts the beginning of the FBI’s serial crime unit and the coining of the term ‘serial killer.’ The investigators interview various imprisoned murderers in order to determine key behaviors or traits that may be common and/or helpful in catching the next. Some of these men I hadn’t heard of until this show – and wow. Monsters like Ed Kemper haunt my dreams.
NURSE RATCHED
The original Nurse Ratched of course comes from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (brilliant movie). This show is somewhat bizarre but all the while entertaining. The peach scene is my favorite.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
I initially laughed a lot in the beginning of this show, only to cry at the end. The last season was very, very real when it comes to immigrants being deported, families separated, and detention camps. It led me to watch reality shows on Netflix regarding women in prison and even teenage girls (Girls Incarcerated).
OZARK
Who has watched this series? The third season just came out and I’ve yet to see any of it. Charlie, however, loves this show and says it’s worth the watch. Adding it to the list.
THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT
This show rather remarkably sent everyone buying chess sets for Christmas – who would’ve thought? It took me three tries to get into this show – the first episode is especially slow. Hang in there, it’s well worth it! I also read that the costume designer specifically dressed her in plaids and prints that would evoke a “chess” mentality. Quite brilliant!
REIGN
This show is super dramatic and often corny, but the historical accuracy is interesting. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots is originally engaged, and then married, to Prince Francis – heir to the French throne and son of Henry II and the infamous Catherine de Medici. There’s a part in this show when Diane (Henry’s mistress) falls out of favor, and therefore her gifted chateau is given to Catherine. Catherine hated the tile work throughout rooms of the castle engraved with H and D – so she very cattily added her C over them. THIS is actually real! When we spent two weeks in France, we visited Chateau de Chenonceau and saw it in person. I laughed at the thought of these two women squabbling in the 16th century. Cattiness is as old as the ages.
RIVERDALE
Ah, teenage drama. Although this is hilariously inaccurate from anything resembling reality, it’s fun to watch.
SCHITTāS CREEK
This show is SUCH a laugh. Eugene Levy never ever disappoints. I’m so sad it’s over but all good things must come to an end I suppose.
SEX EDUCATION
Awkward teenage years of hormones, hormones, and more hormones. The main character’s mother also happens to be a sex therapist, which makes his life infinitely more awkward. I laughed a LOT and love this lighthearted British comedy.
STRANGER THINGS
Who are you if you haven’t seen this sci-fi piece of mastery?
TIGER KING
Oh. My. Gosh….. There are so many shocking things in this show – and when I say shocking I mean you literally question how this is real life? And yes, she totally fed her husband to the tigers. 1000%.
THE WITCHER
I LOVE Henry Cavill – that chin just melts me. I’ve read the first book of this series and can’t wait to see more.
TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE
This is one of the most adorable movies I’ve ever seen – including the sequel. Noah Centineo is every young girl’s dreamboat.
UMBRELLA ACADEMY
This felt like Watchmen but with family dynamics thrown into the mix. It’s peculiar yet interesting. I heard it’s renewed for another season, so I’m excited to see how it continues.
UNBELIEVABLE
THIS was so good, and relatable for so many women. I can’t say how many times, as a woman, I’ve been the target of unwanted sexual attention. Whether it’s a dude who grabbed my butt in a bar (and gets mad when confronted about his behavior), men whistling and hollering obscenities on the street, or patients who think nurses are for fondling – it goes on and on. How many times, when reporting those things, do women get told to brush it off, or worse- they’re not taken seriously? This is based off of a true story that is just unfathomable.
VERSAILLES
Ah – another historical fiction. The French were known for lavish lifestyles – the reign of Louis the Sun King was no different. The characters are all SO beautiful!
VIRGIN RIVER
I originally started watching this show when I noticed the lead male actor is Martin Henderson who played Dr. Nathan Riggs on Grey’s Anatomy. The show revolves around a tiny town nestled in rural California and the comings and goings of small town life. It’s based a series of books with the lead female character, Mel, who answers an ad to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner in an attempt to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind.
YOU Seasons 1 & 2
So many things to say on this show…. particularly Joe’s glass box and how ideal it seems amidst our current self isolation. Both seasons had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. Season 3 looks to be VERY interesting!
13 REASONS WHY
There are so many feelings about this show, and understandably so. A lot of people think it spawned a new wave of teenage suicide – I can understand that, too. I do think, however, this show started to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and talking about suicide. I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a perfect way to talk about these subjects.. but we have to. We HAVE to talk about them in order to help those suffering from mental illnesses or considering suicide as an end to their pain. This show can also be very triggering when it comes to rape, sexual assault, drug use, etc. Again, not everyone is gifted in how to bring up these subjects with their kids or with each other.. and this at least is an eye opener to what goes on in the lives of some teenagers. and the struggles they may be inwardly fighting.
YELLOWSTONE
Can I just say that now I want to move to Montana, live in a log cabin and raise horses? Kevin Costner is fantastic.
DOWNTON ABBEY
I could rewatch this series over and over again. Maggie Smith is freaking priceless as is the banter between Lady Mary and Lady Edith.
THE BOYS
WOW this show was good. Super heroes caught up in scandal.. and possibly manufactured. It’s also a bit peculiar but sucks you in anyway.
CARNIVAL ROW
I LOVED this one. Orlando Bloom + Cara Delevingne made such a great pairing in this mythological/magical drama. Can I be a real life fairy please?
CATASTROPHE
This show is cute and funny! I’ve only watched the first season but so far, it’s lighthearted and easy to watch.
Synopsis: During a business trip in London, an American named Rob meets Sharon, an Irish teacher with whom he shares incredible chemistry. While the two plan to have some fun with no strings attached, things go awry when Sharon learns she is pregnant.
FLEABAG
Okay this British comedy genuinely cracks me up. The main character is a bit (a lot) of a mess and ends up falling for a priest.
GOOD OMENS
Another show that makes me laugh. The main characters are an angel and a demon who somehow acquaint and become somewhat friends. Michael Sheen is brilliant!
HANNA
You might have seen the movie with Saiorse Ronan – but this one is a tv drama equally riveting.
HOMECOMING
I was excited to see Julia Roberts star in a tv series. She works at a facility that claims to help soldiers reacclimatize to civilian life – though she begins to suspect ulterior motives.
JACK RYAN
John Krasinski is one of my favorite actors, and he is AMAZING in this role on Amazon Prime. CIA operative overseas involved in all kinds of anti-terrorism tactics. Itās filled with action and plot twistsā¦ itās like Homeland but a little more action packed?
MAKING THE CUT
The new Tim/Heidi reality tv show! I haven’t watched it yet but I hear good things. I used to love Project Runway so this should be good.
THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE
This is another I’ve heard lots about, but haven’t seen. It’s in my list .. I’ve heard it’s based on what life would supposedly be like if we hadn’t won World War II?
THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
A housewife in the 50s that wants to become a stand-up comedian who suddenly ends up without her man. It’s funny and the costuming is excellent – I need to watch season 2!
MODERN LOVE
This show was SO dang cute. Every episode is its own story and wow, some made me cry. I particularly love the one with Anne Hathaway – wow it’s so close to home.
THE PALE HORSE
I just watched this two part series the other night. Kind of a who-done-it type of story mixed with strange suspicions of magic. It’s pretty good!
THE AFFAIR
Noah, Noah, Noah. This series just ended and I have to say I ended up loving it. I was expecting to fully hate Noah – who essentially leaves his wife and kids for a younger woman – and I did. The story unfolds over several seasons in unexpected and dramatic ways.
THE BORGIAS
You caught onto the theme that I adore historical fiction right? This ties back to the scandal within the ancient days of the Vatican as well as the warring between prominent Italian families. I also very much enjoy Jeremy Irons as an actor.
DEXTER
We recently started this series after hearing the rumor the show would be returning. We’re almost through season 1 and although Dexter is a serial killer, the show has an odd way of finding yourself liking him for his quirks and desire to rid the world of evil people. (I’m not condoning murder).
HOMELAND
Charlie and I started watching this together years ago – and I’m so sad the last season is currently airing. Claire Danes is so amazing in this role – I can FEEL her emotions! My father in law says he was sought after by the CIA (he’s seriously the smartest person I know and speaks SO many languages) – the spy life is something I can’t even imagine. Also available on Hulu.
PENNY DREADFUL
Spooky, kooky and all the mythical creatures come to life. I LOVE this show and the lead actress Evan Green is a favorite of mine in every role she plays. Plus Josh Hartnett – SWOON. Also available on Netflix.
THE TUDORS
Dun dun dun…..another historical drama. Seriously Henry VIII’s reign and personality are so fascinating to me. The man executed multiple wives for various reasons and basically treated everyone like trash. I always try to imagine what life must have been like for anyone in that age. If you’ve read Wolf Hall/Bring Up the Bodies (Hilary Mantel series from the perspective of Thomas Cromwell) or Phillipa Gregory’s Tudor series – you’ll soon grasp the immense paranoia gripping the kingdom. So much death and blood were spilled in the name of protecting one’s claim on the throne. Also available on Netflix.
AMERICAN GODS
Charlie started this one night when I was already falling asleep – so I need to catch up. Consider all gods and deities, spiritual and non-spiritual, come together in modern day life. It’s actually pretty entertaining (from what I saw!).
OUTLANDER
Oh my heart. If Jamie existed in this life, I canāt NOT say I wouldnāt run away with him. Sam Heugen is a dreamboat who does an outstanding job playing Jamie, the Scottish outlander who meets Claire via a magic portal through historically bewitched stones in Scotland. I wonāt say anymore but this love story has me hooked! Every single season entrances me even more!
THE SPANISH PRINCESS
Okay remember our discussion above about the Tudors? So the Spanish Princess is the third installment in the Phillipa Gregory Tudor Series with Starz – the first being the White Queen followed by the White Princess. The White Queen portrays the Battle of the Roses and Elizabeth Woodville’s marriage to King Edward IV. Their daughter, Elizabeth of York, marries the young Henry Tudor (King Henry VII) who usurps the crown from King Richard (Edward’s youngest brother). Elizabeth and Henry are the parents of Henry VIII. The Spanish Princess takes us on a journey of young Catherine of Aragon and her marriage to Prince Arthur, his death, and her eventual marriage to his brother, Henry.
SWEETBITTER
Imagine the restaurant industry in the 90’s – in NYC. It’s juicy and exciting.
VIDA
I binge watching season 2 in less than a day. Season three comes out in late April! The characters are so richly intense you become overly involved in each other their stories.
Synopsis: a drama series about two Mexican-American siblings from East LA. Party girl Lyn lives a carefree life in the Bay Area. She couldn’t be more different than, or distanced from, her sister Emma, with whom she has no relationship. A death in their family forces them to return to their old stomping grounds, where they confront long-repressed feelings and learn the surprising truth about their mother’s identity.
A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES
I loved this show – mostly because I’m a sucker for mystical/sci-fi fantasy type reads. Have you read the books? It’s part one of the All Souls trilogy.
RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE (Season 12)
I ADORE drag race. The banter, the makeup, the talent, the FASHION – it’s so good. Drag is such a unique form of art and expression – seeing the runways is the icing on the cake. Many a look has come down Ru’s runway that I seriously want someone to make for me. For example – Nicky Doll’s outfit in episode one.. wow wow wow!
Others I forgot to mention: the 100, ER (remember George Clooney in scrubs?), Breaking Bad, Lost, the Office, Friends, American Horror Story (I chickened out on episode 1, trying to gather my courage), the Walking Dead (Charlie loves it, I’ve never seen it), Sons of Anarchy (another popular one I never saw), Peaky Blinders (in my list), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Shameless (I’ve been wanting to start this one).
Also shout out to shows I grew up on: Full House, Saved by the Bell, Fresh Prince, Boy Meets World, X Files, Family Matters, Home Improvement, the Nanny, Dinosaurs, Dawson’s Creek, 90210, Cheers, M*A*S*H, Blossom, the Wonder Years (aw!), I Love Lucy (and all the Nick at Nite shows). I also freaking loved me some Xena Warrior Princess and Hercules. Did anyone else watch Unsolved Mysteries and remains afraid of ALL THE THINGS to this day?

Have you seen any of these shows? What are your favorites? Do you have any not on my list? What do you think are the best tv shows (or movies) to binge watch?
This list is amazing! I’m so bad about starting shows, I get too emotionally invested so I have to know the outcome before watching the super intense ones.
Also, I’m so sorry about your clinicals being canceled. My sister is in the same boat, and it really sucks. If there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know.
OMG such a great and thorough list! I loved Chernobyl and The Morning Show. I will check out your other recs! Thanks
I only have Netflix, but I need to watch a bunch of these. Schitt’s Creek was so funny, and I ADORE The Crown. Tiger King was just…weird. Ha! Love the suggestions!
Surprisingly I haven’t had that much extra time to just chill out and watch Netflix. We’ve been doing too many house projects to pass the time! Once we finish up those though, I know I’ll want to chill and I’ll have to refer back to this list!
This is quite the list! When I put my list of shows together, I knew I would be leaving out a lot of fan faves, but I’m very VERY picky when it comes to what I watch. However, I will say that between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney+, I’m pretty set on shows and movies haha!
I didn’t know you made a list! Going to have to go read it š
I love how thorough this list is! You’ve covered the major streaming/tv platforms which is great. It’s not realistic for most people to have every subscription out there, so giving a comprehensive list of what’s available is an awesome resource to reference.

I love so many of these shows but this definitely gives me some ideas for some new ones to check out!
Thanks for sharing this list. I get to add several new shows to my list.
