Affordable Halloween Costume Ideas
Last year was a pandemic Halloween. I mean, if we’re being completely honest, I haven’t been to a Halloween party in years, covid times or not. The older I get, the more I appreciate my time at home to just “be” with Charlie. Give me my jammies, some hot tea, maybe some mulled wine, and whatever show we’re currently stuck on any day of the week. Socializing just isn’t at the top of my list anymore, and I’m totally okay with that. Despite being a hermit, I do love the idea of Halloween and finding something fun to dress up in. Last year, I created an entire month’s worth of Halloween costume ideas on Instagram with weekly dedicated themes. It really was so much fun, enough in fact that I’m doing it again this year! Ah, I can’t spill the beans yet but follow along and you’ll see! Here’s a recap of all of my Halloween 2020 ideas, enjoy! Also check out my first Joker post & my gothy harlequin clown.
Tim Burton Series
The Nightmare Before Christmas.
These looks all require extensive body paint if you’re committed to the entire look, but they’re so much fun! I’ve linked most of the products I used, their costumes, and their alternatives if I could find them. Also.. these videos were all from last year so mind the poor editing, they’re so not my forte.
Jack Skellington
I found a regular women’s pinstripe suit, and some black boots I had in my closet. I found a similar suit tagged below.
Sally Skellington
(Mute this music if you’re opposed to strong language.)
The Corpse Bride
This look by far took the most time to paint and master but it was SO fun!
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
This is my second take on his look. You can see 2019’s look in this post.
Mario Series
Growing up we didn’t have any video games in the house, or at least not until my brother was in middle school. I think? Our cousins, however, had all the gadgets! My video game skills to this day remain rather…unremarkable. Despite my gaming prowess, I always loved playing Mario with my cousins and cherish those precious memories.
It’sa Mee.. Mario!
Luigi
Princess Peach
For Peach I used a dress and shoes I already had in my closet. I linked similar, and the accessories I found.
Toadstool
I also pieced this look from simple Amazon clothing pieces and a piece of red boots I already had. I also linked some other fun character from the game, hi Yoshi!
The Angry Ghost
I could never ever get away from that danged ghost! This dress I found on Poshmark and added some hand-cut felt pieces. You can repurpose any white dress. I also linked some others!
Disney Series
I did a “pink” version of the Mad Hatter in 2019. You can find that post and tutorial here.
Cinderella
Maleficent
Aurora – Sleeping Beauty
Remember when the fairies kept changing the dress color at the very end of the movie?
Peter Pan
Second star to the right, and straight on til morning! Minus Wendy’s dress, I crafted all of these from things in my closet or simple Amazon finds. This is one of my favorite photos!
Circus Series
Can you see Poppy? š
The Ringmaster
My costume is from Etsy and the boots are Zara but I linked the hat and several similar. This also doubles as a Britney Spears circus album costume š
The Trapeze Artist
My exact outfit is no longer available but I found similar and linked all the accessories.
The Mime
I had all of these items from my closet, win! I linked others.
The Lion
Minus the tutus and the headband, I had these in my closet and used regular makeup with lots of bronzer and brown makeup palettes. I found the headband on Etsy.
The World’s Strongest “Man”
Not going to lie.. this was my favorite of this series! Bonus, the romper is suuuper soft and comfy!
Women of History Series
Each of these women was a huge part of history in their own way, and there are so many others that we owe our present day to. May we never forget them.
Florence Nightingale
Considered the mother of nursing, Florence or the “lady with the lamp” revolutionized medicine and inched us toward the modern world. I often wonder what life was like back then, and the thought of “medicine” terrifies me. Handwashing was absurd and just about everything was experimental. Thank goodness for evidence-based practice! Cheers to all of my fellow nurses and medical professionals!
Amelia Earhart
Gosh, what courageous heart she was. I really wonder what happened to her. There are so many theories! Regardless, her outstanding bravery amazes me. She sure didn’t take any bs from men who said she couldn’t!
Frida Kahlo
Frida is an ode to my Hispanic heritage. Frida’s story is a sad one to me. A lady before her time, and one who didn’t give a damn about sticking out. Let her be your inspiration to embrace your weirdness and carry on. I won’t be linking this outfit because this is a cultural symbol, but I hope she inspires you nonetheless.
Lucille Ball
October 15th is I Love Lucy day! Did anyone else watch Nick at Night back in the day? This show and so many others remind me of childhood.
Susan B. Anthony
August 2020 was the centennial anniversary of women’s right to vote! Gosh, how tides have turned here in Texas – subject for another post.
The Care Bears
A DIY look I did, un-related to the above themes was a hand-painted Care Bear sweatshirt. I LOVED them growing up! Care Bear Stare!
I’m truly BLOWN away by your talent and creativity! These photos are all AMAZING. Your makeup skills are phenomenal!! So excited to see what you come up with this month.
