A Night with NBCF
As a healthcare professional and someone whose family breast cancer has invaded, this event struck very near and dear to my heart. Countless women suffer under the devastating grips of this disease, many without the means to gain adequate care. NBCF or the National Breast Cancer Foundation works within the United States and around the world to provide women and their families resources to detect and treat this horrific disease.
On March 25th at the Dallas Museum of Art, hundreds gathered together toĀ celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation and the ability to help those in need. We were gracedĀ by appearances of emcee and local Dallasite Janet St. James, breast cancer survivorĀ (who can captivateĀ a room, and btwĀ sported a fabulous starry night sleeve!), key note speaker Former First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush (who was as graceful, dignified, and charmingly southern as I always imagined her to be), and NBCF founder and breast cancer survivor Janelle HailĀ (talk about an incredible motivator!). We were moved by performances by the Unify Band and Serenata Strings, they were absolutely incredible!
Throughout the festivities artist Ro Diaz was creating a masterpiece painting of Janelle’s story, pictured below. The painting was put up for bidding at the end of the evening with the proceeds put towards the foundation. I cannot recall the specific total but I want to say it went for over $10,000, truly astonishing and charitable! There were a variety of raffles taking place, one of which I actually won! The shopping raffle if you can believe the irony! It included gift cards to Theory, Torrid, tickets to a show at the AT&T center, and running around in a Lexus for a weekend! I have yet to use these goodies since I’ve been out of town so much lately but you’re darn tootin’ I’m getting ready to use them now!
I highly encourage you all to check out their website and see how you can be involved in their programs and charities and/or find out how to educate yourselves in early detection and prevention. Although not as common, breast cancer can occur in men as well so please educate yourselves!
